How does one obtain my identity?
The scary thing about Identity Fraud is how easy it really is to get the needed information, YOUR information.
Think about how many places have your social security number. Your place of work or any place you might have EVER applied at for a job, your doctor's office, accountant, bank, the car dealership you got your last car at, the mortgage company that processed your loan, and so many other places. Now think about how many people have passed through those institutions that might have had access to your personal files containing that number. When you add it up, the number can be staggering of how many people have or have had access to your social security number.
Ever receive a pre-approved credit application? What do you do with your bank statements, credit card receipts, or credit card statements? Ever throw any of that stuff away? If you have, then you have also placed yourself at risk of someone gaining that information. Criminals do what is called "dumpster diving" in order to obtain vital information that consumers and financial institutions may have carelessly thrown away.
Have you ever moved? When you did, did you go to your local post office and fill out a change of address form? Sometimes simply re-routing your mail to a new location can do it.
These are just a few examples of how criminals can obtain your personal information. When you add in the aid technology can provide a criminal the list of possible ways can be endless. Basically, your personal and financial information is out there and available for the taking.
